When the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art opens its doors in Los Angeles on September 22, its fifth-floor gallery devoted to murals will hold an unlikely trio: Banksy, Diego Rivera, and Judy Baca, sharing a room built around one theme — public space as a place to tell stories that are, in one form or another, socially charged.

It’s not a literal collaboration. Rivera has been dead since 1957, and his pieces in the gallery are reproductions of his public murals rather than originals. Baca’s presence comes largely through an extensive video installation of her landmark The Great Wall of Los Angeles, drawn from an archive the museum acquired. What unites the three is curatorial framing, not artistic partnership: senior curator Ryan Linkof has described the floor as an exploration of how artists use public space to tell politically charged stories, and Banksy’s stencil-based work fits that lineage neatly alongside Rivera’s and Baca’s.

Still, the Banksy material is the floor’s clear anchor. Banksy seems to have recreated some of his most iconic murals, including Girl with Balloon, Love is in the Air, No Ball Games, Crayon Foreclosure, Go Flock Yourself – Paris version, and a maquette of the flag statue he unveiled in London this past May. The museum is also showing what the press kit describes as a new, previously unseen work gifted by the artist to the museum. According to a spokesperson for the Museum, Banksy didn’t just lend the work; he “worked with the museum on the installation himself”.
